Week 10

Last week was due to be the final week of archaeological work in this phase of the works however, I’m pleased to confirm that work will continue for at least another 2 weeks as the Council have approved extension of the works around the newly found Castle walls. Wessex will be working west towards the Old Town Hall for another 20-30ft and also appx 10ft north to discover the extent of the walls in this area.

Towards the end of last week, there was another amazing discovery with what appear to be parts of the eastern bastion tower revealed. Early days for this but it looks like the dressed stone has been removed and just the rubble back remains but even so, a significant find and one which gives us a clearer understanding of the gatehouse position on the site.  More on this as soon as we have it.

We are shortly due to enter the second phase of the works which will see more elements of the park constructed but also the daylighting of the River Sheaf. Work will also continue to excavate around the gatehouse chamber which will ultimately be removed in due course once listed planning consent is secured.

All these finds are presenting headaches for the design team, in particular, the routeways through the site, but we will be working closely with them once all the archaeology has taken place to see how the design of the park can change to accommodate the remains of the Castle, the well and also the more modern finds such as the newly named ‘Moat Lane’ !

We think there might be a couple more weekly news poster updates from Wessex so we will share this with you as soon as they are out but in the meantime, to check out all of the posters to date, follow this link….https://www.wessexarch.co.uk/resources/sheffield-castle-site-poster-week-10
