Mary Queen of Scots letters de-coded!

You may recall some time ago that some coded letters written by Mary Queen of Scots had been found in France.  These have now been de-coded and you can have a read through the translations by following the link below.  I think they paint a fascinating picture of Mary’s captivity whilst in Sheffield or ‘Sheffeild’ as she writes, and it was clear that the Castle had many, many important visitors over her period of captivity.  There are only occasional mentions of the conditions she was kept in, but these are hugely significant historical items relating to Sheffield’s history.

With thanks to Ruth Morgan from the Hunter Archaeological Society for the link
