Here are some images captured from the opening ceremony of the Sheffield Castle exhibition in the Turret House at Sheffield Manor Lodge on Friday 19th April 2013. In particular – second row, left – Peter Machan opening the event with the Earl of Shrewsbury framed in the doorway, and FOSC Secretary Marie Gilman on the left. Second row, third image – the remarkable mediaeval coffin that is presumably the one referred to in Hunter’s Hallamshire and uncovered on the site of the castle with a now lost lid with an inscription that allegedly identified it as being that of the first Thomas De Furnival. It is recorded as being on the Manor Lodge site since the early C18th. Third row, centre – Barbara Ashton, Friends of Sheffield Manor Lodge, her alter-ego being ‘Bess Of Hardwick’. Bottom row, first image – Lord Mayor Councillor John Campbell and Councillor Diana Stimely. Councillor Pat Midgley was also in attendance on the day.
