You may well have seen in the local media today that funding has now been secured by the Council to start work on excavations of the Castle site. This is fantastic news and whilst a relatively modest amount, it does give the opportunity to undertake several archaeological trenches/excavations on the site.  The Council has secured this funding as part of a wider scheme of works in Castlegate, also including much needed repairs to the Old Town Hall.

The Friends will be working closely with the archaeologists and Council on access to the site whilst the work is being undertaken, and as Members, our aim is to give you first chance to view what remains are found alongside access to the existing known remains, which we haven’t had access too for some time.

We will have a newsletter out very soon but will keep you updated regularly now as things progress.

If you’ve not renewed your membership recently, please do so to be part of what will be a fascinating and exciting journey!

Funding secured for Castle Excavations!! — 3 Comments

  1. I should imagine that there would be a lot of interest from Sheffield folk if they wanted voluntary helpers for the dig, save the council a bit of brass and move the excavation on. I know 3 volunteers already, give us a shout if needed
