You may have heard or seen in the local media that Wessex Archaeology have been appointed by the Council to undertake the excavations of the Castle, by undertaking a number of trial trenches on the site. Wessex are a national firm but have an office and workforce based in Sheffield and have undertaken several archaeological digs locally.
The great news is that work is due to start very soon, on 13th August for a period of 9 weeks and there are significant plans to fully engage with local archaeology enthusiasts, school children and the general public. The Friends will naturally be heavily involved with these activities during the period and there will be regular updates from Wessex on what they find.
There will be opportunities to get involved with either visiting the work or indeed undertaking some archaeology although the final plans for this are yet to be agreed. If you are specifically interested in volunteering for either archaeological work or helping out with site visits/community engagement, please can you let us know by replying to this email with your details and which area of volunteering you would be interested in.
We will update you with information as soon as it becomes available.
